Minneapolis Public School Lockdown Update

Minneapolis Public Schools lockdown update
MINNEAPOLIS – This morning, we received a tip from local law enforcement regarding a threat made toward a
Minneapolis Public School through two social networking sites. We immediately placed all of our schools
throughout the school district on code yellow lockdown as a precaution. During a code yellow lockdown,
instruction continues as usual, but students remain in their classrooms and outside access to the buildings is
limited. We asked our staff to check the identification of anyone coming to our buildings.
We have communicated this information with families using our automated telephone system and we will
continue to provide telephone updates as we learn more. Staff members will receive e-mail updates in their
school district e-mail accounts. We are also posting updated information on our website (www.mpls.k12.mn.us)
and on our Twitter feed (www.twitter.com/MPS_News) .
All of our schools will remain on code yellow lockdown for the rest of the school day. Parents do not need to
come to schools at this time. The code yellow lockdown was put in place as a precautionary measure to maintain
safety in the schools. After school activities will continue as usual. We will inform families if we decide to
reinstate a code yellow lockdown for tomorrow.
Our proactive safety measures were put in place smoothly and without incident. We are pleased with the
effective response of our school and district crisis team members, and we are thankful for our strong
partnership with the Minneapolis Police Department, which is currently conducting an investigation into this
situation.
